I have often heard of how effective birth control is in keeping the skin smooth and healthy. I even have friends who have used pills to treat acne problems. They were recommended to take the pills after topical creams and other oral medicines have failed to answer their concerns. With all the things being said about the effectiveness of pills in keeping skin radiant, I decided to do a little research and I’m now sharing what I found out.

There’s nothing new about using birth control pills to address hormonal problems including acne. There is a debate though on whether or not using pills is actually good considering its effect on the users’ monthly cycle and mood. There are also issues of birth control kicking off a person’s melanin production thereby resulting in skin discoloration and dark patches.

On the other hand, there are many who stand by just how effective birth control is in keeping their skin smooth and clear. This is especially true among adults who have acne problems. With the quest for a perfectly radiant skin being a life-long journey, those who have tried and tested the effectiveness of pills stand by it.

But just how effective is birth control in making your skin radiant? Here’s what you need to know:

For adults having acne problems, the root would definitely be hormonal. As sebum, an oil made by glands, clogs pores and promotes bacterial growth, it also contributes to acne. Androgens, which stimulates the production of sebum, is normally produced at low levels in the ovaries and adrenal glands.  Taking birth control pills lowers androgens resulting to lesser sebum thereby lessening acne problems.

How effective birth control is in clearing the skin has been recognized by medical practitioners. Doctors recommend it to as young as 14, who need contraception and are experiencing mild to severe acne problems.

Birth control pills are effective only in terms of acne induced by hormones. For reasons other than that, different means are then introduced. These may include topical creams or taking antibiotics. It is also possible to use a combination of these treatments for best results.

Just like any other treatments, taking pills have its pros and cons. Clinical trials showed just how effective birth control pills are as patients had fewer pimples, lesser acne flare-ups and inflammation and less severe acne. As for its cons, taking pills for a long period of time increases the risks of women to side effects like stroke, heart attack, depression, hypertension and migraine headaches.

While studies have shown just how effective birth control pills are in keeping the skin clear and radiant, taking it should be proceeded with caution. Make sure to see your medical specialist before actually using it. Divulge all medical information including the medications you’re taking, if there are any, as these may have effect on your body.

It is also best to discuss the possible side effects of the oral contraception so you would know what to expect. Lastly, the overall health of your skin does not merely depend on how effective birth control is. You should also maintain a regular skin care routine.
